The Third Tale — after the Snow Goddess and the Cat Maiden

She was waiting beyond the gate — a fox spirit in human form, a shrine maiden of Inari walking through a deepening autumn. 31 pages, every line drawn by hand with a toothpick and Sumi ink.

"She is the one you once were."

At the very end of the Second Tale, the Cat Maiden turns to look back at a torii gate beneath the moon. Someone was standing on the other side, waiting. This is her book.

In Japanese folklore the fox is a messenger of Inari — a spirit of rice and harvest, of bonds tied and changes made. Here she wears no ears and no tails; only a white fox at her side, and a red cord she has not yet learned to untie. Across thirty-one hand-drawn plates she moves through the autumn, from the first golden leaves to the first snow, among chrysanthemums, bellflowers, bush clover and red spider lilies.
